"Anything Goes" at Lakeshore Players Theatre

Get ready to set sail with the classic Cole Porter musical Anything Goes at Lakeshore Players Theatre. In only the second local production I've seen in the 15 years of Cherry and Spoon, director/choreographer Kyle Weiler (whose work was last seen at Lakeshore in the charming She Loves Me last season) leads the team in this fun escapist show full of clever and witty songs, madcap humor, and fabulous dancing. It'll leave you with a smile on your face and a melody stuck in your head. "The SpongeBob Musical" by Unlabeled Theatre Company at Park Square Theatre

"When you have a disability, you live with a lot of labels. Labels that other people put on you. In some cases, you have labels slapped on you before you're even born. Most of those labels aren't particularly helpful. So we're ripping off those labels: Unlabeled Theatre Company." I was pleased to be able to experience my first Unlabeled production this weekend. They have a unique performance model in which they pair an actor with a disability or who is neurodivergent with a neurotypical actor. So two people are portraying each character, saying (or singing) the lines in unison with mirror, or shadow, movements. Their third production in about a year is The SpongeBob Musical, which I'd never seen before, nor have I ever seen the popular cartoon upon which it's based. Unlabeled is doing an abbreviated 75-minute one-act version of the show (that features songs by David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, and more), and I found it to be a really sweet, inspiring, and relevant show about community, friendship, and joining together in times of crisis. The performers are all so genuine and pure in their performances, beautifully supported by their shadow partners, and it's really wonderful to see a truly inclusive cast. Because everyone deserves the opportunity to participate in theater, and experience the benefits that can provide in one's life. "Guys and Dolls" at Lyric Arts

Lyric Arts Main Street Stage in Anoka is closing their 2017-2018 season with a fun and classic musical - Guys and Dolls. Is the story dated and full of gender stereotypes? Yes. But it's also chock full of great music, including many popular songs ("A Bushel and a Peck," "Luck Be A Lady," and my favorite, "Sit Down, You're Rockin' the Boat"). Lyric Arts has assembled a fantastic cast, and the show is well-staged in their small performance space. If you're looking for a fun '50s era show, Anoka is the place to go.

"Into the Woods" at Lakeshore Players Theatre

Lakeshore Players Theatre has been the community theater in White Bear Lake for 65 years. Even though I'm kept very busy by professional #TCTheater, I'm a little ashamed to admit I've never attended an LPT show despite living in the Northeast metro. This spring, they're opening a brand new performing arts facility just off of Highway 61 in downtown White Bear Lake, which speaks a lot to their audience and donor support, as well as to their commitment to continuing and furthering their legacy. This new building, combined with the fact that their first show in the new space is one of my favorite Sondheim musicals, convinced me to make the short drive to finally check them out. I was impressed not only with the new facility, but also with the quality of their production of Into the Woods. Sondheim isn't easy for professional theaters, much less community theaters, but there were zero cringe-worthy moments and they really pulled off this tricky show remarkably well.
