"Robin Hood" by Zephyr Theatre at Aamondt's Apple Farm

On one of the hottest days of the summer, I sat outside in the blaring sun and stifling humidity watching a new-ish retelling of the classic Robin Hood tale. Only for theater would I put up with such miserable conditions! To their credit, Zephyr Theatre had coolers full of water bottles and wet washcloths which helped immensely. And to the actors' credit, they recognized the situation and brought it into the story, instead of pretending we were all sitting inside an air-conditioned theater. But the good news for you is that next weekend's weather forecast looks much nicer, so if you go it will be a much more pleasant experience for you. But even with the heat, I enjoyed this fun playful show with a great cast, featuring the directorial debut of Children's Theatre Company's longtime company member Reed Sigmund, who's comic stamp on this production is very much evident. Join the adventure at Aamodt's Apple Farm (a beautiful and easy to access location just outside of Stillwater off 36) this weekend only!

2025 Minnesota Fringe Festival Must-See List

This summer marks the 15th anniversary of Cherry and Spoon, which also means it's my 15th time attending the Minnesota Fringe Festival; I first jumped into this wild theater marathon in 2011 after my first full year of blogging. I started with seeing just 10 shows that first year, peaked at 54 shows (out of a possible 56) in 2016, and have since settled into the 30-40 show range, which I've found is doable for me, but still a fun challenge. There's really nothing like the Minnesota Fringe Festival for adventurous art and supportive community vibes, but you don't have to see double-digit shows like the pros, you can just see a few shows. The festival is very organized and well-run, with a comprehensive website that will tell you everything you need to know. Keep reading this post for my Fringe tips, after my annual Minnesota Fringe Festival Must-See List.

"Church Basement Ladies" by Rags to Rags Productions at Plymouth Playhouse

How is it that I've been a theater blogger in Minnesota for 15 years and have never seen a show from the Minnesota musical comedy institution that is Church Basement Ladies? I have no excuse, other than possibly geography (the shows have primarily performed in Plymouth and Burnsville, neither a great location for me), and that it's produced by a production company (Troupe America and/or Rags to Rags Productions) rather than one of the many theaters I frequent. Whatever the reason for this omission, it has been remedied, and I have now been indoctrinated into the basement. After eight sequels, the original Church Basement Ladies has returned to its original venue, Plymouth Playhouse underneath a Ramada Inn off 494, to celebrate its 20th anniversary. The three original ladies of the basement are still with the show, which works like a well-oiled machine at this point. This musical comedy is very broad, very corny, very Minnesotan, and whole lot of fun. This incarnation of Church Basement Ladies continues through August 24, after which they're sure to pop again somewhere, and I hope to visit the basement again!

"Much Ado About Nothing" by Gray Mallard Theater Company at Sociable Cider Werks

My favorite new #TCTheater summer tradition is Gray Mallard Theater Company's "Shakespeare in the Pub." Not quite in the pub, they perform in the parking lot outside of Sociable Cider Werks in Northeast Minneapolis, with a variety of ciders, beers, and non-alcoholic beverages available in their tap room, and a permanent food truck. But best of all, it's Shakespeare performed outdoors the way it was meant to be - fun, playful, professional, and free. Part of their mission is to remove the economic barrier to theater, they don't even have reservations, so you just show up and watch the show (but if you're able, consider making a donation to support their work and mission). For their 4th annual show (my 2nd year attending), they've chosen the original rom-com Much Ado About Nothing. They perform Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays at 7pm through August 3, and there's really nothing better than sitting outside on a gorgeous summer evening, sipping a beverage, and watching some great Shakespeare.

"Love and Baseball" at Artistry

On the day after the Minnesota Twins' All-Star center fielder Byron Buxton made history by becoming the first player to hit for the cycle* at Target Field, capping off the nominal first half of the best year of his career, I saw a play called Love and Baseball in Artistry's Black Box theater. I love baseball, and I love theater, so when the two combine it's pretty much my favorite thing. But don't worry, you don't have to love baseball to love Love and Baseball, in the same way that I love the play Colossal and the TV series Friday Night Lights despite the fact that I don't like football, and I love the play The Wolves and the TV series Ted Lasso despite knowing nothing about soccer. As all of the above exhibits, sports are a great metaphor for life, and a great framework for telling a story. In this case, the story is a love story between two people, one a baseball fan, one not so much, who have a chance encounter that changes both of their lives. It's a sweet and funny rom com that's well cast, directed, and designed, in Artistry's intimate black box space, a great two-hander that's a joy to watch even if you're one of those people who inexplicably does not appreciate the beauty of the game. As director Eric Morris writes in a note in the program, "How can you not be romantic about baseball?!" Go watch this and then tell me baseball isn't dramatic, theatrical, emotional, and wonderful. And then get your tickets to see Love and Baseball.

"The Music Man" at Lyric Arts

I'm a sucker for The Music Man. There's something so joyful about this story of the charming con man who comes to a closed-up Iowa town and sells them not a band, but the power of music, community, and a common goal. The band may not be real, but the joy and newfound togetherness in the town is very real, and even more valuable. Lyric Arts' fine new production is sure to sell out just based on the name recognition of the beloved musical, but it also lives up to expectations and provides a joyously fun and heart-warming experience that reminds us that we're better when we work together. Visit River City via Anoka now through August 10.

2025 Great River Shakespeare Festival in Winona

It's summer, and that means it's time for my favorite theater vacay in Minnesota - Great River Shakespeare Festival in lovely riverside Winona. For over 20 years, GRSF has been producing excellent theater, primarily but not exclusively Shakespeare, within a festival that includes community engagement events, making it all feel like a fun, welcoming, theater camp. With two shows performing in rep with an acting company of nine, you could make the two-hour drive down along the river and see both shows in one day (Friday or Saturday), or stay in Winona one night and get back home to continue your weekend, or stay several nights and enjoy all of the nature and activities that are to be found in Winona. This was my 7th year attending the festival and it was once again a fun, relaxing, engaging weekend. Now in the post-season pre-Fringe lull in #TCTheater is a great time to get out of town, enjoy summer in Minnesota, and experience theater in the festival setting! Shows continue for two more week/ends, so make your plans now!

Broadway tour of "Kimberly Akimbo" at the Orpheum Theatre

Somehow I missed seeing the 2023 Tony-winning best musical Kimberly Akimbo on Broadway, so I'm thrilled that it finally made its way to Minneapolis for one short week. I went into the show knowing almost nothing about it (which is rare for me), other than it was about a teenage girl with a disease that caused her to age rapidly. As the show unfolded, every moment was a delightful surprise. This is not a big splashy huge-cast over-the-top kind of musical. It's a small intimate story that's told well, with complex, distinct, relatable characters, and music that perfectly expresses the emotions of the story. Truth be told, that's my favorite kind of musical. It's similar to a Next to Normal or Fun Home in scope, but much lighter in tone, although it does deal with some heavy themes as our Kimberly deals with turning 16, the average life expectancy of someone with her (unnamed) disease. But it's also really funny, sweet, and touching, with fun, catchy, singable songs. It's the kind of musical that will lend itself well to regional productions, and I look forward to that, but in the meantime, don't miss this opportunity to see this well-deserved Tony winner live and in person - through July 13 only!

Musical Mondays at Lush, July 2025

The last time I went to Musical Mondays, it was the night before the 2024 presidential election. At such an uncertain and scary time, it was so comforting to be there in the welcoming community that is Musical Mondays. Now, eight months later, when the world is even more scary and uncertain than we could have imagined on that night, it still feels so good to gather in community and celebrate artists, music, and being together. Because no matter what, "the world goes round," and so does this monthly cabaret series started by BFFs Max Wojtanowicz and Sheena Janson 13 years ago. This was the 108th installment of Musical Mondays (but only my 23rd), and featured an incredible cast of six talented performers, some old faves and some new faves, supported by an awesome three-piece band. Truly, if you're a fan of local music-theater and you've never been to Musical Mondays, you are missing out on one of the things that makes this community so great. And as I say all the time - if you're a person who casts local musicals, you really should check this out and cast all of these people in your shows! Read on for a summary of this month's show, and make your plans to attend the next show on August 4 (if you can take a night off Minnesota Fringe, which I probably cannot). Watch their Facebook page for the cast announcement and other details.

"Much Ado About Nothing" by Frosted Glass Creative at Rustic Roots Winery

On my way home from St. Croix Festival Theatre to see their super fun production of Kate Hamill's Ms. Holmes and Ms. Watson, Apt. 2B last weekend, I stopped at the gorgeous Rustic Roots Winery in Scandia to catch the final performance of Frosted Glass Creative's production of Much Ado About Nothing. It turned out to be a lovely theater road trip day. Outdoors really is my favorite way to experience Shakespeare; it's so much more fun, playful, and accessible. Frosted Glass Creative has performed at Yellow Tree and other locations around town and along the St. Croix River, but this was my first experience with them. And hopefully not my last; their next show is my sentimental favorite The Sound of Music, performed outdoors in Stillwater for one weekend in August. They seem to have taken up the mantle of "Broadway on the St. Croix" after Zephyr Theatre dropped it, and I'm glad they're continuing this fun tradition of outdoor musicals in beautiful Stillwater.
